HOW TO CLEAN SILVER

To make the cleaning silver process more educational, let's flash back to a high school chemistry class. Maybe it wasn't a favorite subject, but sometimes it was interesting. Especially when there was some excitement from the minor (sometimes major) explosions of chemicals mixing and reacting to each other. My biggest triumph was getting the litmus test paper to turn blue. Or was it supposed to turn purple? Anyway, SCORE! if it turned a different color! So what does that have to do with how to clean your silver?

Well, basically, NO SCORE! when your silver turns colors! One thing changes the appearance of silver and that is sulfur, or air and food that contain sulfur, like eggs.  That dull gray or black "stuff" that forms on your silver is called tarnish. It's not pretty and tarnish removal is a must to restore the original beauty of the silver metal. The scientific name for tarnish is silver sulfide. Most of us just call it "yucky" or gross".

Silver tarnishes very quickly in places with bad air quality. So living in a city with high air pollution and smog will cause your silver to tarnish much quicker than if you live in a place with acceptable air quality on the index. Humidity can also speed up the formation of silver tarnish. It seems, however, that skin contact from using your silver items or wearing the silver jewelry retards the formation of tarnish.

Learning how to clean silver is important to restoring the beauty of this metal, but using your silver is the best way to enjoy your investment.

Tarnish Removal

Simply put, removing tarnish from your silver means removing that thin black film of silver sulfide coating. There are basically 2 approaches to clean silver, both initiate some type of chemical reaction.  Some methods are quite simple using commercial polishing creams and good old hard work; others you just dip the silver into a solution and polish.  Some use common household items. One method is just like a science project and fun to do. Others can require major professional chemical company cleaning installations.

Any do-it-yourself method requires you to be careful so as not to injure yourself and others with the fumes of chemical reactions or toxic ingredients.

We will review the simplest a little more in detail .
